January 8, 2009 Thursday - flew from Hue to Saigon and then Saigon market

Grilled corn - and could those be more Hột vịt lộn? Well, we were far too full (and tired) to find out.
Stuffed animals at the market.

Marielle, Chicago, Huong, Dallas - enjoying a drink and dessert.

Thuy Chicago - very tired.
This is so far removed from where we have been working for the past two weeks.
We walked to the upscale part of town for a drink at a bar - sort of like going to a place on North Michican Avenue in Chicago.
The Central Post Office in downtown Ho Chi Minh City
Thuy, Huong & Marielle
Warren enjoying dinner.
Tracy and Mong Hang having fun.
Warren, Tracy & Mong Hang - and a sticky rice ball.
The waiter is carrying a plate of Hột vịt lộn that are not in the shell. The man on the left does not look thrilled. Guess he will not be ordering a similar plate!
Eating dinner - you can see some of our group on the left.
Red envelopes for Tet - for giving money for luck. The color red symbolizes good luck and happiness.
PLEASE WATCH OUT YOUR BIKES!
Sticky rice in the lower right corner, the green packets. So good!
In the middle of the picture are frogs, alive, suspended from a string. Waiting to be cooked. Did not try them either.
Watching them cook the food while we were waiting for a table. This is a restaurant in the evening street market. A market, including restaurants, that gets set up every evening and broken down by morning.
Thank you, TH, for not asking me to eat this on the trip (at least not knowingly!).

Getting ready to go out to eat - again. It seems like that is all we are doing. There actually is a lot of walking around as well.

A food cart right outside of our hotel. It all looks so good and it is tempting to buy something to try. Maybe next trip!

A dad picking his son up from school.
The food was great and it was wonderful of Michael to bring us here and treat us to this lovely meal (except the eggs!).
Another view of the duck (Hột vịt lộn).
Scallops - so good!
Huong eating a fetal duck egg (Hột vịt lộn) - can't tell if she is enjoying it or not. Hmmm.
Now these were wonderful!
Michael and a fetal duck egg.

These look like eggs. But what they really are are fetal duck eggs (Hột vịt lộn). Warren and I both passed on these.

Lunch - Thuy contemplating snails.

TH, Huong & Thuy

Amazing sights at the market. And many items that I could not identify!

A toddler sleeping while her mother works. I wonder if the toddlers spend a lot of time in seats like this - we have seen them in the market and at the street stands. Perhaps that is why they are so complacent as compared to the toddlers in the U.S. - because they are used to sitting more.

Checking out the wares.
Looking down at the crowded market.

Beer

Snails
Ambulance
Heading out in a cab to go to a different market.
Huong & Dallas in our new hotel lobby.
TH getting us registered at our new hotel - Sanova.

Finally at our new hotel with our luggage - and my hat!
The man on the bicycle is selling coconut milk in the shell - with a straw.

Dallas relaxing in the lobby of the Lan-Lan Hotel, waiting for our rooms to be ready
Dried fish in the market.
Look at this amaing boat.
The little eating place where the man watches and the woman works.
The entrance to the market.
Lunch time at the tailor shop.
Not sure what he is carrying but it is big!
She is carrying her shop with her - food, pots to cook in, stools to sit on.

This little store has amazing wooden boats. The man was working on one when I was there. We did not get one but I am planning to do so on the next trip!
A combination parking place for motorcycles AND a place to get something to eat.
Look at this spider web of cables - everywhere in Saigon.

Warren getting the suit fitted.
Fruit - we have eaten these little clementines every day. That is dragonfruit on the left.

The woman is just laughing away.
This place is just down from the tailor - the old man just stood and watched the woman work.
Market views
A sidewalk place to eat.

TH trying to register us at the Lan Lan hotel - except there are not any rooms ready.

Selling fruit from her bicycle. And I now have a hat like hers!
The bicycle helmet poster that says that children should wear them too.
Seen from the taxi on the way to our hotel in Saigon.
Looking for a taxi or 2 - actually - 3.
Warren changing his pants to shorts. It is hot in Saigon.
We still have a lot of luggage - even after leaving the donated manikins in Phu Loc.
Michael, Thuy, Colleen & Jeff S.
At the airport waiting for all of us to get our luggage.
Our plane. The service was very nice - no complaints about Vietnam Airlines.
The airport in Ho Chi Minh City.

Arriving in Saigon.
Leaving Hue.
The airport in Hue.
Tam looks very sleepy. It is 0830 in the morning so time to be awake.
Omelettes made to order.
Warren trying to decide which is the real coffee.
A marvelous selection of bread.
Breakfast at the hotel - looking out the window over the city of Hue.

Back to HCMC (Ho Chi Min City - Saigon). We left early to get to the Hue airport and flew back to Saigon. We got to the Lan Lan Hotel around 1100 AM, only to find that we could not get rooms for a couple of hours. So, most of us headed out for lunch and shopping and a few stayed around the hotel lobby to deal with the issues - oh, yes - and the luggage! Thank you TH and Thuy Chicago. Thuy Dallas was there too - but sleeping. The two weeks of going, going, going has gotten to all of us. But, our agenda for the day was to pick up Warren's suit and do some last minute shopping. We headed back to the market and then to the tailor where we found that the suit was too tight. So, they are going to work on it and we will check in later or even tomorrow. I found a neat shop with hand made wooden sailing ships of all types and sizes. Quite detailed and just amazing. I should have bought a small one but did not - next trip. I did get a lovely carved wooden Vietnamese lady.
We took a taxi to a different market - very crowded - and then Michael treated us to lunch at a restaurant that he knows. We hat the opportunity to eat Hột vịt lộn but Warren & I declined. We went back to the hotel and found that we were moving to the Sanova Hotel since Lan Lan was not going to have rooms. As far as I could tell, this was the only glitch in the trip. I have to say that TH has done an amazing job of taking care of us and orchestrating this entire mission.
Sanouva is brand new and very nice. Our bathroom is amazine - quite modern. Time for a quick nap - and then out for dinner. It seems that all we are doing is eating. We walked to the night market. Every evening there is a market that is set up outside, on the streets surrounding the day market. Everything gets put up around 5 PM and then is taken down around 3 AM - every day. Restaurants too. So we ate at one of the restaurants. An excellent meal. Then we walked 'downtown' to the fancy part of town, for a drink and dessert at a bar. Some folks stayed out later but Warren, Thuy Chicago and I headed home.
