Journey for Children - Vietnam 2008

Hospital, Stable or Home???

We leave on Friday, December 26 for Vietnam. We are traveling with Journey For Children. You can read more about this organization - and see more blogging - on their web site - http://journeyforchildren.org/index.php.

We are traveling with two other nurses from Children's - Thuy and Colleen. And with two nurse midwives - Nancy and Sabina. And a very large team of Dentists and Dental Hygienists. Warren & Jeff, Colleen's husband, are accompanying and will be kept busy helping us set up, filming us working, and registering dental patients.

We will blog as we can so that you can all see what we are doing. We will be teaching CPR and Newborn Resuscitation and Safe Motherhood classes.

Today, in Church School, we talked about where people were born. Hospital or stable. Everyone in our class was born in a hospital. One girl was born in Russia! No one was born at home. Where we are going in Vietnam, most of the babies are born at home and there are no doctors or nurses there to take care of them. Because of this, many babies die. Our goal is to teach how to take care of pregnant Moms, how to take care of babies after they are born, and how to do CPR to save lives if a child chokes or is having trouble breathing.

Today we met and packed some bags. We are taking all of our teaching supplies with us as our checked luggage. We are allowed two bags each and each bag can only weight 50 pounds. So far we are doing good! We still have lots of room. We are very lucky as two local companies donated teaching manikins (Armstrong Medical and WorldPoint).
